Old Airport TNR report

We initally wanted to trap two colonies that night - this Old Airport one, and the one at Haig Road. But upon another recce, it turns out that the Haig Road colony is bigger than initial cat count, so we decided to conduct TNR on just the Old Airport site, and Haig Road another round.

The Old Airport colony is small, and we were unfortunately hindered in our trapping that night because, despite our instructions, the feeder went and fed the cats before we trapped them. This meant we could only trap 2 cats for neutering from this colony. We also brought a stray cat from a nearby Dakota colony along for neutering, for which the feeder there paid for his surgery ($25).

Adopt Pat and Shane - petrol station rescues

"Herow. I am Pat."

"Hurro, I'm Shane!"

These 2 cuties came to our foster home at 3+ weeks of age. They were rescued from a petrol station. Story was that a motorist there found the kittens inside his vehicle (van or pick-up), probably because a mother cat gave birth inside it. No mother in sight, only these two kittens. The motorist dumped the kittens out of his vehicle at the road side near the exit of the petrol station. Rescuers picked them up and nursed them for a day before bringing them to us.

At the time, both Pat and Shane were still on a only milk diet. We weaned them, and now they are able to eat dry kibble on its own, and drink water on their own too. They were litter trained, which they learned easily in a day.

Pat is tabby and white with a mid-length tail, and Shane is red tabby with white with a long tail. Both of them love to climb, meow with humans, and they get along with older cats. Because they are still small, they feel safer roaming a small space than the whole home.

Both kittens are healthy and now independent enough to be re-homed! They have been dewormed, no fleas or mites, no symptoms of illness, litter-trained. At the time of this post, they are 5 weeks of age. Their eyes haven't completely changed colour yet and they are too young to get vaccinated at this time.

The Story of Salmon the Red Tabby Kitty

 "Am a really shy boy. Mew."

Salmon came to our foster home with his brother and his sister a while back. They were rescued from a busy intersection at Grange Road where their own mother had already died in a traffic accident.

Unfortunately, all three of them were feral. This meant that, if they couldn't be socialised as domestic pets, the humane solution was that they would have to be neutered and released. Thus began our socialisation process.

We fed them calming supplements like St John's Wort, tryptophan; we used aromatherapy to calm them. We did a lot of cat-whispering - essentially just talking and posturing in cat language. We gave them hugs and used touch therapy. At first they were very violent and us humans got injured badly by their bites and scratches. Then we got to a point where they would merely hiss at us and back off whenever we approached. After that, the socialisation progress came to a standstill. Only Salmon seemed receptive.

Salmon's brother and sister were neutered and released in Ubi, where there are feeders (there weren't any where they were rescued from), cat-friendly coffeeshops, and most of all, away from a busy intersection. Salmon's sister was especially ecstatic when we released her.

The three of them were extremely healthy with strong immune systems. So when Salmon stayed behind, we introduced him to a friend - Napolean. This was a calculated decision: Napolean had all the traits of a great house cat - vocal, purring, affectionate, loves human contact. Salmon was likely healthy enough to fight whatever flu' viruses Napolean might shed. We monitored Salmon closely - no signs of flu' since introduction, till today, he remains healthy. The best part was, Salmon now is very much like Napolean: friendly, like hugs, purrs in response.

Salmon remains an intraverted kitty. He gets scared of sudden loud noises, and has a great need for security. But he is officially a suitable house cat. Once he gets to know you, he will communicate with you with rubs and purrs! And yes you can hug him!

As of this post, Salmon is around 26 weeks old, neutered, vaccinated, litter trained. He is a dark red mackeral tabby with a long tail and Oriental features.

3-legged partially blind cat needs YOUR help.

Appeal for Calipod from Love Kuching Project on Vimeo.

Calipod is a stray cat from the Geylang area who has been missing a leg since birth. She has struggled by coping with having only 3 legs.

Unfortunately, she had an injury to her eye recently. Our volunteer took her to the vet where she had to have surgery and rehabilitation off the streets.


Her veterinary bill came up to $898.57. Her case is on Cat Welfare's Special Appeals section now.

Adopt Braveheart

Braveheart the kitty has a special rescue story, and that helped us coin his name.

Oh, he is Braveheart also because he has a cute heart-shaped nose!

This boy came to us last week via a seasoned kitty rescuer in the industry. Braveheart previously had a human, but his human was irresponsible and negligent, and Braveheart fell ill. The human even cut his whiskers. To further his suffering, the human didn't want to spend money on vet fees, so Braveheart landed in the hands of his rescuer who paid for his veterinary treatment for his diarrhoea.

Now he is healthy, and we already began housetraining him. He is really mischievous sometimes, climbing atop parts of the house which are no-cats-allowed zones, such as grilles, table and counter tops. But when disciplined, he responds very well and does not break the same house rule twice. Naughty but teachable!

When he is not playing he adores human affection. If you don't want to hug him, he will look for you to meow or climb on top of your lap anyway. And purr.

Braveheart is 14 weeks old as of the time of this post. He is white with ticked tabby markings, with a long tail. He is litter trained, deflea-ed, free of sickness, vaccinated (first booster), able to eat both dry and wet food and drink water on his own. He enjoys the company of other cats and playing with them. And he loves to talk to humans when he wants something, like food.

Next TNR project - again made possible by @dukeorange!

We will be heading to two areas near each other to help sterilise the cats in these colonies: Old Airport Road and Haig Road. Both areas have high human traffic and so we are not publicising the exact blocks or locations the cats can be found due to culling risk.

Both areas have caregivers that have sterilised the cat populations, but recently suffered because of suspected dumping of unsterilised cats. Now the caregivers cannot cope doing TNR on their own.

In the Old Airport Road vicinity's colony, there are 5 newly dumped unsterilised cats. In the Haig Road vicinity's colony, there are 3.

We will be conducting the trapping on 29 March Thursday evening 9pm.

Update on small Lenny

Lenny is now 23 weeks old, and is still down with flu' which he had developed since he was 4 weeks old. This is why he is still not available for adoption. While his flu' symptoms have alleviated through both oral and topical medications, supplements, and alternative remedies, the flu' viruses don't seem to go away. Between us and our vet we have tried 2 kinds of antibiotics, various lengths of courses, but nothing has really worked. We are currently controlling his symptoms with eye drops and nose drops. As you can see in the photo below Lenny still has watery eyes and nose that is just a bit too runny.

Recurring teary eyes

This week, we brought Lenny for his first vaccination. Usually, sick kittens are not vaccinated until they are healthy, but because Lenny has on and off flu' all this while, our vet's advice was to get him vaccinated nonetheless.

Lenny is also going to start next week on a new antibiotic, azrithomycin, since he didn't respond as well to the previous types of antibiotics.

Regardless, Lenny is a really affectionate and talkative kitten. He eats a lot and drinks water well. He enjoys playtime very much and really loves humans a lot. He is undersized for his age, growth probably stunted by all the sickies, but that doesn't daunt him at all when he wants food or cuddles!

Paws crossed that his new medication works! In the meantime, we are still boosting his diet with supplements to boost his own immune system.

Help Coco and Popsie

Popsie: "We be needing your helps!"

Two newborn kittens. Left abandoned in Choa Chu Kang and made into orphans. Fell very sick. Now need help. 

The story of Coco and Popsie came from an appeal sent to Cat Welfare Society's Special Appeals posted on 20 March 2012. Their total vet bills added up to $668.27. As of today, the amount outstanding is at $643.27.

Coco and Popsie had to stay hospitalised for a rather long time, put on the drip. They had skin infections, cat flu' that was quite severe as ulcers had been formed inside their mouth, making them lose interest in food. They would not have survived if their rescuer not brought them to the vet.

Now both kittens have been discharged and currently cared for by a fosterer. The intention is to get them adopted once they have fully recovered.

Message on behalf of Echo: "It be my birthday soon...

... I be turning 1 human year old!

The humans want to celebrate for me when I become adult cat. For I is now kitten. When become older cat, is special. I am already special, say the humans. But celebrate birthday for become adult cat is also special. So I is very very special kitty!

Humans also tell me very many times that I need to leave this foster home and go to forever home. I have no forever home to go to yet, so Auntie Elaine says I must make many humans know about me so they be adopt me and I can has my very own humans to rub and purr and knead on everyday.

So for my birthday we is be have online party. For online party can spread far to many humans and more will know how much I love humans and want a real home. This way also humans who cannot come and see me to give me my favourite Angel Salmon Treats can never mind see me online through video and tweets-picktures.

I will be tweeting on @luvkuching using hashtag #echochats and Auntie Elaine is will stream video of me doing things like sleeping which you can see also on the twitter. This will happen next weekend. Because actually neither the humans (nor I myself even though is very clever) know when exactly is my birthday, so they choose weekend.

If you is want to visit me, you must first contact Auntie Elaine through SMS or Whatsapp at 90880675. Because she be need to tell Uncle Andy to clean the foster home before you come.  Most weekday nights after 8pm and weekends after 1pm is be okay. You may also appear on the video!

Presents? Me wants to have humans to rub, knead and purr on, and take me home forever. So is want you to share to many friends who are also humans about me, because I am special.

But in meanwhile, we share everything in this house, so can give food, everycat can eat. We be like the expensive canned food actually but is be expensive so we not always have. Foods like Addiction Turkey, Addiction Duck, Wellness CORE Chicken. We likes. We also likes the Taste of the Wild, can also be the fish flavour one. But if you not want to give expensive foods is okay because eat the normal ones also can.

If you want to give human money to Love Kuching Project also ok. It is will go to our Veterinary Fund, because I be very sick when was young and sick kittens be need medicine which is very yucky but important. Medicine for us foster kitties is buy with Veterinary Fund. Also when we see our nice doctor, human Dr Dawn.
