Juju and his out-of-protocol adoption

| Juju, next to his sister Splotch (previously Willow) |
Rashid and Diana recently lost their cat Jolie, to cancer. Then Juju, out of all the other kittens remaining while they were still alive, came to comfort Rashid. So Rashid and Diana, who is also our new Clinical Manager, decided that when Juju was available for adoption they would throw their hat in the race for him.

But in the light of all the kitten deaths we have dealt recently, we have decided to skip the adoption protocol and award Juju to Rashid and Diana. They had already been bonding with him a lot. It has been hard work, losing kittens to a suspected virus (Juju is being monitored too and is now already living with Rashid and Diana). They will be bearing the cost of Juju's treatment and care from here on.

Diana as our new Clinical Manager has had to work very hard during this trying time of volunteering in a new, more expansive role even while she just lost the cat she adopted together with Rashid. Looks like Juju had worked his juju on her.

We apologise for moving away from our usual no-reservation policy for this case because of its special circumstances. No chope-ing is allowed because we have had the experience where the those who reserved the kitten never appeared. Our adoption policy strictly is such that applications for a cat with all Adopters' Questiionnaire answers must come after the the adoption post. It is hard to post Juju's adoption post after so many of his friends have gone over the rainbow bridge, the photos are really hard to look at. We seek your understanding that we have in this case awarded a kitten to an adopter out of protocol. We wish our Clinical Manager and her husband all the best with their new kitten.

Adopted: Stout and Ranger

Jeslyn with Stout and Ranger

 An update email from Jeslyn:
Both of them have been renamed. Stout is now known as Usko (pronounced wush-ko), which means Faith in Finnish and Ranger is now known as Gioia (pronounced joy-ah), which means Joy in Italian.

I'm really glad that the both of them have adapted well to the new environment and are eating, drinking, pooping and playing well. I'm actually really glad to have adopted two; they are great companions to each other, sleeping together, playing together and I've seen Usko groom Gioia as well. They are really friendly with people as well! I have friends who came over to play with them and so far, they have been interacting well with everyone who came by. When it comes to sleep, they will sometimes show their bellies and Gioia sleeps like a log; no matter how we touch him, he refuses to wake up, which is really adorable.

Two brothers for life. BFFs!
Thank you Jeslyn for giving them a forever home!

Cuddy and Fanta got adopted by a volunteer, now named Peaches and Buttercup

| Gracie, Outreach Volunteer, and family |
On Tuesday, Cuddy went to her forever home with Fanta, adopted by one of our volunteers, Gracie. Our prerequisite for Cuddy's adoption was that she be adopted with a foster sibling, so this was a match made in heaven!

Gracie is an Outreach Volunteer, who brings cats to nursing homes and hospitals to administer Feline Therapy. On Saturday, she brought Peaches and Buttercup to Renci Nursing Home, to help them kick off their therapy cat career as pet cats.

Both of them have seen the vet already! Super responsible parents. Dr Dawn Chong advised them as much as a new cat owner would need in a consultation. Cuddy had developed teary eyes as a result of her new move - stress-induced flu' - and both of them had a bacterial skin infection and medications were given.

They have already eased into their new home well and play with each other every day. We love these kinds of happy endings.

Abandoned, rescued, socialised, rehabilitated and adopted - Ranger from Serangoon

We don't normally allow adoptions before a cat is posted on our blog for adoption but we are making an exception for this fellow, a true "cats' cat" who cannot live without feline siblings.

This boy, Ranger, was found abandoned in Serangoon. Likely a cross between a pedigree and a local cat, he was found lost and alone and nearly knocked down by a car. He was extremely feral and didn't enjoy the rescue process -at all-.

He came to us, and it took a while before he stopped hissing at us humans. Then he fell ill with a high fever, for which we had to administer fluids and give him ice-packs for a few days. He recovered and the rehabilitation actually started to make him love humans more.

We realised also, he really much preferred the company of other kitties. He developed a best friend relationship with Stout, a foster sibling. He would suckle and knead on Stout, and Stout would groom him - when Ranger squealed from his vaccination, Stout checked on him to see if he was okay!

We had a visit this Wednesday, and the adoptive family wanted to adopt one of the kopitiam kittens, but wanted two best friends. Because Stout and Ranger are so close, they will be taking this pair home tomorrow.

Ranger already had his adoption ad photoshoot with Furry Photos, so here are his photos nonetheless, because he is really cute. He is a bit slow, very chillout, and like Stout, okay with dogs, other cats old and young.

We always want to give priority to those who can adopt two kittens, not only because it means a better adoption rate and reduces shelter care time for the cats, but also because kittens go better as a pair. And Ranger being uniquely close to his BFF, enjoying very much the companionship and play with other friends his age, this adoption is really a match made in heaven.

Will post the adoptive family's photos with the pair when they go home tomorrow, on our social media. Join us in congratulations to the family when we do!

Jacqui got adopted!

Lovely Sunday mews!

Family portrait with new family member!

The family was very open to our cat care tips such as diet, litter choices and cat introduction - they have another cat they adopted from SPCA. We love how they are so willing to learn new things to make their cats' lives better.

They will be bringing Jacqui to the vet for her last booster and checkup next week.

Thank you for giving Jacqui a forever home!

Good News! Moca Is Now Jiro Because...

... his foster caregivers adopted him! Some of you may remember Moca from when he was rescued and brought to us. Our Treasurer, Vivien (shown in picture) offered to foster him as both Alvin and her work schedules will allow Moca's 3 hourly feedings.

Not only was Moca infinitely cute, e.g. this:

I be cute

The resident kitties were also very open to having him around. Jay especially (also adopted from us) was very brotherly towards him

"Must take care the small one."

Then Moca had a bacterial infection and needed some -more- care than his feeds.

Dr Dawn checking what happened to lil one
During this time the resident kitties became even more protective of Moca, the foster parents became more and more in love, and so, foster caregivers became adopters ;)

Not every fostering scenario ends this way hor, so don't be afraid to foster, in case you end up keeping the cat when you already cannot. Always never fear to rise up and foster.

Our adoption drive with Cat Welfare Society [@CatWelfareSG] on Sunday 4th May

Pet Lovers Centre at Kembangan
The new Pet Lovers Centre at Kembangan, not far away from the MRT station, has an area set aside for working with animal welfare groups such as Cat Welfare Society, to hold adoption events. It is not a big area, but it is a start! Don't buy, adopt.

Set up of our corporate coloured cage

Together forever siblings
Volunteers speaking to potential adopters
Adoption drives very rarely have successful adoptions straightaway, usually, some are potential adopters visiting who have already contacted us before, like Zuliana.

Zuliana was the first to write to us about Dumpling, answered all 9 questions of our Adopters Questionnaire, sent us pictures of her safe windows and balconies. She shifted her schedule around so she could come visit us the next day with her helper, because we have a "whole household must be present for the visit" rule.

So, the next day, after a good chat, Dumpling got adopted.

Zuliana was there too at Kembangan, but she missed the opportunity to hug Dumpling on Sunday, she got her chance the next day and forevermore. Thank you Zuliana!

From Rescue to Rehabilitated to Rehomed - a story with a happy ending.

This is Jemmy, our latest rescue kitten that we didn't blog about till now because he fell ill.
Jemmy loves catnip pillows

Having his first shower and grooming session
He was rescued by one of our volunteers, an effort that was no mean feat. He arrived on 8 February, and we approximated him to be of 7 weeks old at the time.

His rescue story went like this. Our volunteer Camie was out with friends and family when they discovered a kitten was meowing and hiding inside the engine of a parked car. After a long time of trying to get him out, Jemmy was too scared to and it was an impossible feat. They then left a note for the driver of the parked car hoping he will try his best to remove the kitten before he drove off.

Hours later, Jemmy was still there. The motorist had not returned to his car. In the end, Camie's friends and family jacked up the car the got Jemmy out. But he was so scared, he ran to hide under a motorcycle. Being so afraid of his surroundings meant that he was not a kitten born on the streets but was abandoned. He was very affectionate, and we took him in hoping he would be a positive influence on Dumpling and Elfie who were still far back in their socialisation period. He in the end did make a difference.

We were about to post him up for adoption, and get him vaccinated as soon as possible, but then he got the flu'.

The poor thing face!

After he recovered, he got his vaccination and check up and is now a-okay!

He is super active, playful, and affectionate, and he doesn't even mind Scotty the dog.

An introduction session

Became a good friend to his pen-mates

Then, before we could post him for adoption with his lovely portraits taken by Furry Photos, a couple approached us for a kitten that was about Jemmy's age. They didn't care what colour, what gender, and they fulfilled the criteria for adoption: their house windows were super cat-proof.

By Saturday, Jemmy got adopted!

Jemmy with his new parents!

We like how this story went from rescue to rehabiliation to rehoming in one post! Hope you enjoyed it too. We want the same kind of stories for the other kittens still waiting for adoption. See the right side bar under Adoption Alert and give the other kitties their forever homes too!

#tbt #throwbackthursday C is for 'Celebrity'

So we went for this awesome Cat Welfare Society lock+store adoption drive in October this year, and brought some of the adoptable cats we had then to the event. A week later, somecat that had become rather famous among many Love Kuching fans, got adopted.

He came to us with a construction site injury
Yup, the half-toe-gone handsome-cat, at the time of arrival 6 months old, named Cooky:

Cooky was a cat that relaxed a lot even as a kitten
Got photographed when he grew older, portrait by Furry Photos

We thought all hope had gone, because although Cooky was an awesome foster cat who did well with visitors and even excursions, and loved to sit like a beached whale, bully his peers from time to time, and had great sleeping postures, he just didn't have the luck, till he met his would-be dads, Julian and Ryan.

When his dad and cat carrier came for him

Julian with Cooky
Cooky was about to meet his older brother, Pepper, but when he went to his forever home, he had more important things to do:

Sleep, we must.

Oh yes he likes baskets in his new home
He also still likes sleeping in the basin. That too didn't change. His dads let him do it! So much love.

Older boy Pepper was the sweet and gentle brother and after his initial displeasure with Cooky, eventually warmed up to him. But Cooky realised Pepper was easy to bully, so he dominated the household as soon as he could! Pepper even tried to groom Cooky once and got smacked by naughty Cooky. Cooky never dared to do that to his elders here, not even gentle Sealy the Kitten IC... maybe Pepper is too sweet a boy!

His dads love them both of course, and Cooky's new toy became his favourite:

We hope you like today's Throwback Thursday post! Keep them coming, you say? Sure, help us share the love on the adoptable kitties on the right side bar okay, so we can keep these wonderful forever-love stories going!

#tbt #throwbackthursday When 2 best friends got adopted together

On 2nd August 2012 a lovely couple brought a handsome boy recovering from an eye infection to our foster home after emailing us his story, with this photo:

Guess who!
Then the following month in the same year, some kitten stepped on burning joss paper on the ground, and came to us for veterinary and foster care too.

Looking poor-thing!
They got well, waited more than a year for a forever home, became best friends, and on 28th September 2013, at our #loveagain adoption event, got adopted together by Rodney and Karen.

It was an amazing adoption because, Ebi, a very, very shy boy, warmed up to his new mommy that night, something he never did to anyone so easily before. Karen believes best friends should be adopted together, so Sunkist went along to his forever home too! How awesome are such adopters.

Obligatory goodbye shot before the boys left

Contrastingly, Ebi (now Cubby) warmed up sooner than Sunkist (now Sunny) and became affectionate boys to their new parents.

Sunkist eventually made himself at home

Unfortunately, of late, all of them haven't been getting along with one another. A lot of fighting has been going on, and eventually their dad called us for advice on how to resolve the conflict before somecat got seriously hurt from the daily scuffling. We advised them to get Feliway, and homeopathic remedies such as Pet Alive Pet Calm, Pet Alive Aggression Formula and Rescue Remedy, and then followed up with them, because the last thing we want is exasperated heartbroken furparents having to rehome their cats because of manageable cat behaviour problems.

We are launching Cat Behaviour Management consults for cat households next year, making it easier on cat owners with unacceptable cat behaviours, and thus reducing abandonment of cats - behaviour problems are a huge reason why cats get surrendered to shelters. More soon when we fine-tune how we can do this for you if you need help, in the meantime, always feel free to drop us a comment, text, email, if you need some advice. First rule of thumb for cat behaviour problems? A visit to the vet to rule out physiological problems. Always.
