While Andy and I are not big on holidays, Christmas is coming anyway. I do have a Christmas tree, a relic from my childhood, with archaic decorations to match. I love it, but I haven't been putting up the tree in recent years and right now my main concern is that the cats will take to it like a fish to water, destroying my childhood memories with it!
So for us, our Christmas decoration is limited to a wreath our on main door. But if Christmas is big for you, and you would like to have a Christmas tree, I found this article's tips quite useful. One tip I like is the spraying of a pet deterrent - try Fooey or Ssscat or anything citrus - on the tree to keep pets away. Our flat is not big enough to house the Christmas tree now, because in place of where a Christmas tree could be, is our cat condo, so putting the tree in an obscure location will not work for us - there is no obscure location in our living room.
The cats have a rule - anything on the floor is theirs, anything on tables is ours. If you have trained your cats this way, you can consider putting a small tree on the coffee table instead. I place scented candles on the coffee table and the cats never go on top of it to knock them over. So there are ways to make sure your holiday celebrations are cat-safe.
And in the spirit of Christmas - God's love coming to earth for all - remember that "A righteous man regards the life of his animal." The Bible, Proverbs 12:10. Holidays are critical times for animal rescue groups; more people abandon pets during holidays, as part of the 'spring-cleaning' for the visiting and decorations. So, share the love with the animals around you too, there can never be enough love! Care for the helpless ones, and shower more love on those that are in your family -
Christmas turkey for dinner? The cats will love it! Happy holidays!
