Panther has been adopted!

By Tris and family who live in a condo on Sentosa. They moved to Singapore from the UK recently with their 14-year-old cat Cleo and have been discussing plans to adopt a kitten since Christmas last year. Cleo has been around the world with the family - they bring their cat wherever they move to - and is also a black cat like Panther.

Back in the UK, Cleo was a cat with outdoor access, but since the family has moved to Singapore, they maintain a strictly-indoor policy, blocking off all access points so that their cat won't run out or climb through a window.

The family will be in Singapore for quite a while, so Panther will be spending the rest of his kittenhood in Singapore.

Panther immediately became his cute self when being cuddled by the kids, snuggling into them and suckling on their clothes. He definitely fell in love with his two new human sisters, and was reciprocated with lots of fawning over and cuddling.

The family will be bringing Panther for his first vet checkup once he settles into his new home, also to schedule his upcoming booster jabs, next deworming and such.

Here is a picture of the family - Daddy Shawn was holding the cat-necessities - and that blob of fur on Mommy Tris being Panther baby!

We are happy for Panther, now a Sentosa cat!

Adopt - Panther

Panther baby is ready for adoption! For the past week, he has been totally weaned off the bottle, eating lots on his own, and learned to use the litter box well. It's been a long journey for him and his brother Panda (who is still ill and thus not ready for adoption yet) from the day he was just one day old, to the boisterous little kitten he is today - the brothers turn 5 weeks old today exactly. Now, he has learned to play with older kittens and cats, and loves to climb, walkabout and explore -

Look how much he has grown! From the day he arrived with his brother Panda -

Now, he is a kitten that cannot sit still! - but we got some pics of him -
Chubby Panther

His lovely bluish-black fur

Panther has been dewormed, and is now on a diet of Natural Balance canned food and moistened Solid Gold Indigo Moon kibbles. He hasn't learned how to drink water on his own yet, so he will need to be on a free-choice canned food and moistened kibble diet. He is healthy, loves attention from cats and humans alike, confident, talkative and playful.

Panther's colouring is bluish-black, he has a mid-length tail with a cute kink, has no white spots, and his fur is thick.

Cassie - now rehabilitating

This little tricoloured girl was rescued last night from the Bendemeer construction site when we conducted the second round of trapping-for-neutering of the stray cat colony there.

There are still other kittens around her age - 8 weeks old - there, but they are very feral; Cassie is the only tame one that we could rescue, apart from Phoenix (who is going to her new home this weekend if all goes well).

Cassie had 3 other siblings who died early on. When we saw her during our initial recce there, it was not her sibling that we saw her hanging out with, but her mother. Her mother is one of the 11 cats we trapped for neutering last night.

Cassie is very skinny, even skinnier than Phoenix when we first rescued her. She is very tame, and healthy albeit undernourished and dehydrated.  She is still very shy, but is not aggressive towards her pen-mates. She submitted to her showering last night readily (no fleas!), and enjoys being held even though she is still shy towards us all.

To relieve her stress, I popped some Rescue Remedy into her mouth. And to boost her appetite, some Lysinium Max. When coaxed, she eats the Natural Balance canned food with moistened Solid Gold Indigo Moon kibbles, but very little. Beefing her up will take a while. She doesn't yet take to dry food on its own, which is just as well since she needs the moisture.

Will be monitoring Cassie's progress as the days go by, hope the little girl cheers up and eats more soon!

TNRM at Bendemeer construction site - Round 2

CWS Logo-Link to us!

Last night we trapped 11 more cats for neutering at the construction site; it was a one-and-a-half hour affair, using four blanketed traps. Most of the 11 cats were from the second gate. Across the filter road from the PIE expressway, there is another extremely feral albeit small colony of cats that doesn't fraternise with the cats from the construction site itself. We went in to recce, and could only see 2 hiding amongst bushes, and apparently 1 of the cats inside had just given birth. Because it was impossible to see who was the new mother, we couldn't trap this colony of about 4 cats.

We also rescued one kitten who is really skinny, and is the only other tame one among the lot of kittens at the site. Her name is Cassie, and we will blog more about her soon. She needs to bulk up and get healthy first; she is likely undernourished. She is now recuperating and making friends with the other foster kittens, and our cats have already greeted her heartily. Here is Cassie en route to our foster home.

Here are pictures from last night's work.
And the mug-shots of the 11 cats that are having their sterilisation surgeries today -

We will be releasing the neutered 11 strays tomorrow afternoon, at the same relocation site.

Meowy was adopted on Sunday!

By Jessica and her family from Katong! Here is a picture of Meowy with Jessica -

Jessica's family has one other pet, a Maltese; their previous cat had passed away from old age. Jessica will be introducing Meowy to their dog slowly, but it is obvious that the confident Meowy will eventually be the alpha-cat and leader of them both!

Jessica was the first to respond when we posted Meowy's story, because she had previously tried to adopt a kitten from us but due to our high-speed adoption rate she took no chances and contacted us immediately. Her ex-classmate also had adopted from us before.

Meowy fell in love with her new human sister upon first sight, playing with her and just generally acting her cute self on our couch.

We are happy for Meowy and Jessica's family!

update on King, now Harvey

Hi Elaine,

Please see attached a few photos of Harvey in his new home. Seems to be settling in very nicely. We've already managed to integrate both Knoxville and Harvey, and we dont even need to separate them during bedtime anymore. They seem to enjoy each other's company! Which is a fantastic thing! :)
Harvey is eating well, no problems with food or health at all. Loves to sleep on our bed under the comforter, just like Knoxville!
Thank you for giving Harvey to us!

Best Regards,
Nadia Ng

Bendemeer Rd construction site TNRM - Round 1 - return - relocate - bill

The first 9 cats trapped for neutering at the Bendemeer Rd construction site returnd from neutering and rehabilitation today. We relocated and released the cats this afternoon at 3pm at Blk 56 Kallang Bahru.

CWS Logo-Link to us!

We chose a spot which was a mini-garden, far away from roads and passers-by, and the feeders stationed themselves there, with food and stayed till even after we and Damy left, so they can clear up any uneaten food and bowls. Very responsible feeders!

We chose the mini-garden also because there are plenty of bushes under which the cats can hide and survey their new territory before responding to the feeders. The feeders will return tomorrow as well to the same spot to check on the cats.

We also passed the feeders the letter that states that Jalan Besar Town Council does not cull sterilised tipped-ear cats -

Here is the vet bill for the 9 cats' sterilisation surgeries -

and the bill that includes also the trapping, cat-taxiing and boarding pre- and post-surgery

A big thank you to all donors who contributed towards the Bendemeer Rd construction site cats!

The second round of neutering for the remaining mature cats at the construction site will take place on 10 Aug Tues 8pm together with the feeders.

abscess - Panda

Panda now 4 weeks old, developed an abscess this morning. He had abrasions on his hind leg joints to which we have been applying antiseptic. Unfortunately, probably because Panda has very thin leathery skin and he's still not accustomed to the litter tray, unlike his brother Panther, one of the abrasions has developed into an abscess. We are rushing him to the vet now. We are tapping on our veterinary fund which is actually primarily for Helga, but because this is an emergency we will be using that first. Will report the vet bill later today.

Update after vet visit: Panda saw Dr Dawn Chong and here is her diagnosis. Panda's abscess is not that serious - does not have a lot of pus, so surgically removing the fluid will probably not result in much. She says that Panda will unfortunately need antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for the abscess, and to continue using the antiseptic lotion and powder (peroxide and Baneocin) on his abrasions. She also recommended us to get Bactroban ointment for his abrasions and for the abscess, available OTC from human pharmacies.

She also said that Panda's immune system is quite weak, so continue him on Lysine+vits and Acidophilus. We will also be getting colustrum (supplement from cows' first milk after giving birth) for him to help boost his immunity.

The medicine she gave us - Danzen and Clavulox - was dissolved into glucose syrup for easy dispensation. She could not give Panda a jab because he is too small to calibrate the injection for him accurately, hence we will be syringing him twice a day after milk feedings.

Panda on the way back with us from the vet
Panda is still unable to eat on his own. Panther on the other hand is a greedy hound of a kitten! He is now staying with Meowy and Phoenix, having a ball playing with Meowy. The first thing he did when he entered their pen was to eat! Meowy and Panther are now sleeping together on Meowy's blanket. It is also easier for us to monitor Panda on his own, and he is slowly getting used to being without his brother - this also means there is half the amount of pee and poo in their pen that will infect his wounds, which is probably partially what caused the abscess apart from his overly thin leather.

Panda is due for a review in a week if his abscess does not subside and heal, because Dr Chong is rather worried for the little one. She also shared our sentiment that if Panda was still a stray, he probably won't have survived till now because he is a little weak.

Panda also has soft stools, which Dr Chong hopes the antibiotics will help clear up.

Here is today's vet bill for Panda. We had to tap on our veterinary fund. If you would like to help us cover today's vet bill, do donate to our Love Kuching account and let us know that your intention is to cover Panda's veterinary bill.

We still have high hopes for Panda, and left the litter tray in the pen (actually a large carrier) for him in case he finally realises he can pee and poo there, just like his brother Panther did when we introduced the litter tray to them. But we will keep him on milk feedings, and not be placing food in there for now because he gets himself covered in it, (unlike Panther who is rather clean), which will worsen his wound.

Little Panda attracted quite a lot of attention at the vet! Lots of people said he was really cute, and he is. He got sniffed at by some doggies, stroked by some humans and children. We hope he gets well soon! It was an anxious morning for us but now we feel more at ease knowing the abscess isn't as serious.

TNRM - Bendemeer - funds raised!

Update 6 Aug 2010: We have raised the funds! The additional funds were donated by @Weiru, @d3stinee, Randy, and Chris. Any excess funds not used for the 2nd round of neutering at Bendemeer on 10 Aug Tuesday will be directed towards our next TNRM project in Ubi.

First, the urgent news. There are not 12 cats, but 21 cats to neuter at the Bendemeer Road construction site.

We trapped 9 tonight, mostly female. Upon calculation, given our current sterilisation fund is $800, we need to raise at least $425 more. We will be trapping the remaining 12 cats next Tuesday 10 August at 8pm. This means we need to raise this extra $425 by Thursday latest. We need your help.

For tonight, we met the feeders of the Bendemeer Rd construction site colony of stray cat at 8pm together with Damy to conduct the trapping for neutering of the colony there. We managed to trap 9 cats, some tame ones by hand with the help of the feeders, others by trap.

Because the cats were gathered very closely together, we used blankets to cover the traps so that other cats will not get alarmed when one of their kitty friends enters and closes the trap door. This method works well for cat colonies that are very communal and gather densely together.

We talked to the feeders more tonight, and they will be joining us for the return of the 9 cats - to the new site, 4 point blocks across the road under Jalan Besar GRC. They will be feeding the cats there upon their release so that the cats know that the new place is their new feeding ground and they will recognise their feeders with their bowls and food. Here is a map of where we are moving the sterilised cats to -

X is where the construction site is. The red circle is the relocation site.

Next Tuesday, we plan to trap for sterilising the remaining 12 cats.

As for the kittens, we can rescue, rehabilitate and re-home one or two of the tame ones. Most are Phoenix's age. Some are very feral. The rest of them shall have to stay at the construction site. The feeders will still be feeding at the site. We will have to conduct another TNRM when the kittens there mature.

The feeders recounted to us that many cats have injured or died from traffic accidents at this construction site, owing to the high-speed traffic coming from the PIE filter lane towards Bendemeer Road. They have buried a lot of cats' bodies in the grass patch outside the construction site.

For the 9 we trapped tonight, unfortunately (our camera is broken and we haven't yet got a donation of another digital camera) Andy's phone camera malfunctioned and could not capture all 9 pictures of each cat, only 8. We will post the vet bill of the 9 cats that will be neutered tomorrow morning to account for the cat-count. Here are the pics of the 8 out of 9 cats that we trapped tonight -

We need your help in raising the $425 remaining funds needed for the 12 cats left to neuter and relocate from this Bendemeer construction site. Any amount will do. To donate, our Love Kuching account number is POSB Savings 188-52652-7. SMS Elaine at 90880675 to indicate your donation is for the sterilisation of the Bendemeer construction site cats.

rescued mixed-Persian kitten - Phoenix - rehabiliating at our Love Kuching foster home

When we went down to the Bendemeer construction site on Tuesday, not only did we run into the feeders to get them on board with our TNRM tonight, we also rescued a sick kitty whom we have named Phoenix.

Phoenix is very skinny, and having teary eyes. She is now on Vibravet antibiotics and Ilium Opticin eye medication twice a day. She is also on lysine and vitamins to help her recover and boost her initially poor appetite. She is also on acidophilus. She is now eating better, and her eyes are less teary. She will continue to be on antibiotics till Saturday. She also needs to put on some weight. We dewormed her yesterday.

Phoenix is likely cross-Persian - she has long fur, and shares Persian personality traits - quiet, easy-going, not that into climbing and such, quiet meows, enjoys lounging around more than playing.

She will only be available for adoption once she has regained full health.

As you can see from the pictures she still doesn't look too well. We hope she recovers soon! She will make a great pet cat for a deserving family.
